বিমান থেকে নেমে দীর্ঘ সর্পিলাকার পথ পার হয়ে যখন ইমিগ্রেশনের লাইনে পৌঁছলাম, ততক্ষণে সেখানে গরুর হাঁটের মতই ভিড়। আহা সেই সময়, যখন মানুষ লাইনে দাঁড়িয়ে পেছন থেকে ধাক্কা-ধাক্কি করতো, গলা খুসখুস করলে কাশি দিতে লজ্জা পেত না! ব্যাগ থেকে কাগজপত্র বের করে হাতে নিয়ে লাইনে দাঁড়ালাম।

মেঘের ফাঁক দিয়ে লন্ডন শহরের টুকরো টুকরো ছবি দেখতে দেখতেই বিমানের চাকা মাটি ছুঁয়ে কেঁপে উঠলো। যাত্রার এই শেষ এক ঘণ্টা যেন অনন্তকাল ধরেই চলছিল। মেঘলা মন খারাপ করা আবহাওয়া আর সাথে টিপটিপ বৃষ্টি। এক টার্মিনাল থেকে আরেক টার্মিনালে যাওয়ার শাটলের জন্য লম্বা লাইন।

সিকিউরিটি এরিয়া পার হয়ে বিশাল লাউঞ্জ এলাকায় এসেই মনে হলো হারিয়ে গেছি। আর সেই-যে ধাক্কাটা, লাগলো এখন। মনে হচ্ছিল কী নির্বোধের মত কাজ করছি। সব ছেড়ে এত দূর যাত্রার তো কোনও মানে হয় না। এরচেয়ে এখান থেকেই একটা ফিরতি ফ্লাইট ধরে ফিরে গেলে কেমন হয়?

দুই-তিন দিনের তাপ-দাহ শেষে হালকা ঝিরিঝিরি বৃষ্টির এক দুপুরে ঢাকা থেকে মার্কিন মুলুকের উদ্দেশ্যে যখন যাত্রা শুরু হল, তখনও ঠিক বুঝে উঠতে পারিনি যে সব ছেড়ে কত দূরের পথে রওয়ানা হচ্ছি। তখন মাথায় একমাত্র চিন্তা, সামনে ৩০ ঘণ্টার লম্বা সফর! ধাক্কাটা প্রথম লাগবে মোটামুটি ৮-৯ ঘণ্টা পরে। সে ব্যাপারে পরে আসছি। মার্কিন মুলুকে যাত্রার প্রস্তুতি মূলত শুরু হয়েছিল এক মাস আগে থেকে। দূতাবাসের হাসিখুশি কর্মকর্তা যখন বলল আপনাকে অনুমতি দেওয়া হচ্ছে, এক সপ্তাহ পরেই পাসপোর্ট হাতে পাবেন – তার পর থেকে। তার আগের যা কিছু সবই ঝুলন্ত। মোটামুটি প্রস্তুতি ছিল যে কর্মকর্তা আমাকে বিমুখ করবেন, আর আমি হাঁফ ছেড়ে বাঁচবো। কে চায় তার চেনা জগত থেকে বের হয়ে অচেনা রাস্তায় পা রাখতে?
